My father died and now the house is mine, but he had a lot of credit card debt...? - york county deeds
My father died last week. My mother is the beneficiary of life insurance and, as his name on the deed to the house is now the sole owner of the property.
My mother wants to transfer the deed to me (we are ready).
My question is: Since my father had some credit card debt (all under his own name, my mother is not) in one of the cards, the creditors may be a lien on the house before or after it is set to transfer to me? So if you are not a lien, he may take against the house (my mother or I) responsible for his debt?
We live in New York (Suffolk County) and do not have the company credit card information over the death of my father. Anyone can offer help would be great.
Thank you!
